Rings of Power season 4 release date: why 2028 is the year to circle — before season 3 has even aired
Amazon is already building the next season of its billion-dollar epic before this one has aired a single frame — and the calendar math only points one way.
The Rings of Power season 3 doesn't premiere until November 11, and Amazon is already deep in season 4 paperwork. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the production begins pre-production this fall, with cameras rolling in early 2027 — and given the series' established cadence, THR's own conclusion is that season 4 lands in 2028. That's the year to circle, with one asterisk: technically, season 4 hasn't even been formally greenlit. Amazon is just behaving, loudly, like a company that has no intention of stopping.
Why the rush, suddenly
Because the gaps have been brutal, and everyone knows it:
- Season 1 premiered September 2022 — the biggest launch in Prime Video history.
- Season 2 took nearly two years, arriving August 2024.
- Season 3 took over two more, landing November 2026 — it filmed from May to October 2025 in the UK and Switzerland, and drops in batches: four episodes day one, then two and two over the following weeks.
For a series that reportedly costs on the order of a billion dollars across its run, letting audiences forget it exists for 26 months at a stretch is a luxury even Amazon stopped affording. Hence the overlap: build season 4 while season 3 airs, compress the wait, and honor the five-season plan baked into the 2017 rights deal with the Tolkien Estate. Amazon's own press materials keep insisting the show is
"one of the highest performing and most-viewed titles ever on Prime Video,"
with over 185 million viewers claimed worldwide — a number the company would very much like to keep warm.
The other clock ticking
There's also competition coming from inside the house of Tolkien. Warner Bros. releases The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum — Andy Serkis directing and starring, Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood returning, Jamie Dornan as Aragorn — in theaters December 17, 2027. If Rings of Power slept through 2028, it would hand the entire Middle-earth conversation to a rival studio's movie. A 2028 season, arriving in Gollum's afterglow, does the opposite.
Endgame Encore re-release, September 25: the Doomsday footage depends on which ticket you buy
First, though, season 3 has to land: it jumps forward several years into the War of the Elves and Sauron, and finally covers the thing the whole show is named after — Sauron forging the One Ring. Whether audiences show up in November decides how loudly that 2028 date gets said out loud.
