We love to see artists making bank.

Summary

  • Outlander star Sam Heughan is running a company worth a reported £5.5 million
  • He also creates award winning spirits
  • In 2019 Heughan added 'Producer' to his resume
  • Much of Heughan's spare time is going towards a charitable initiative

For those out there annoyed at the idea of an actor raking in the big bucks for 'standing around in front of a camera' (quote directly sourced from my grumpy dad), there are a couple of things you should know.

First, anyone who thinks acting on a show like Outlander is easy should try getting up at 4:30 am to stand around in freezing mud for 13 hours.

And second, while we certainly wouldn't begrudge Sam Heughan making a fortune on television, the hardworking performer owes his (reportedly) enormous bank account to a lot more than his acting work.

He Runs A Company

Heughan started the performing arts firm Cairn Mor Creative in 2015, after the first season of Outlander was filmed. As of 2016 it was a tiny company, with reported earnings of only £87,625. This year, that number is up over £5.5 million.

Oh, And Another Company

Cairn Mor Creative isn't the only company run by Heughan. He also owns Great Glen Company, co-founded with Alex Norouzi. Norouzi is an American entrepreneur and a friend of Heughan. Under the auspices of Great Glen, the pair developed The Sassenach Whisky and The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin.

Both spirits have been hugely popular, with limited release runs that sold out quickly and have won a number of industry awards. This includes Sassenach Whisky's three straight years of 'double gold' from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

When the Wild Scottish Gin was announced, Heughan stated, 'I personally spent so much time, tried and tested all the botanicals available in Scotland and then came up with this unique batch of 8 botanicals, inspired by home, in the south west of Scotland.' He's not just saying that – all reports indicate that Heughan is pretty hands-on.

And He Acts, Of Course

On top of all his business outings, Heughan is likely making an enormous paycheque from his work on the popular Starz series Outlander. He plays romantic lead Jamie Fraser, a dreamboat highlander from the mid-1700s.

Outlander opens in the year 1945, when former military nurse Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe) is visiting Scotland with her husband. While there, Claire stumbles across some ancient standing stones and finds herself transported to Jamie's era.

According to a 2017 report in Variety, Heughan was making about $100,000 per episode of Outlander at that time. However, given the fact that the show couldn't possibly go on without him, it seems likely that the number will have risen considerably in the last six years.

Heughan also added the title of producer to his resume in 2019, giving him an extra job (and, we assume, an extra paycheque) on the Outlander set.

But He's Also A Philanthropist

In Heughan's spare time (how he has any is a mystery), Heughan is a fitness fiend. He founded My Peak Challenge (MPC), a fitness program with a following around the world. MPC takes all of the money made through its programming and donates it to a variety of charities. So far Heughan's program has raised $7.4 million USD for various causes.

A Country-Wide Benefit

Heughan isn't the only one benefiting from Outlander's massive appeal. 'The Outlander Effect' has been a big boost in Scotland's tourism industry, with fans of the show coming from all over the world to see the beautiful country in person.

It seems that everything Heughan touches turns to gold – and the television star is sharing the wealth.
