Tommy’s ‘Give Sarah my love’ addressed to Joel in The Last of Us’ latest episode might have broken a couple of hearts, but also caused some confusion about who the long-forgotten character is. We’re here to remind you who Sarah is in The Last of Us and why she’s brought up upon Joel’s death.

The Last of Us has given an official farewell to Pedro Pascal ’s Joel in the most recent episode, seeing other key characters reel from his passing three months afterwards.

Apart from Ellie who, despite all the issues the two had, thought of Joel as her father figure, the latter is also saved by his brother Tommy who in one of the first scenes takes time preparing Joel’s corpse for the funeral himself.

However, it was Tommy’s only short phrase to Joel that might have become the tragic highlight of the entire scene — here’s why it’s so important when paired to the shot of the watch on Joel’s hand.

Who Is Sarah and Why Tommy Mentions Her in The Last of Us New Episode, Explained

Tommy’s only phrase ‘Give Sarah my love’ meant for Joel is a direct reference to Joel’s long-gone daughter Sarah who was shot by a soldier during the first day of the virus outbreak in the first season’s episode 1.

Portrayed by Nico Parker, Sarah didn’t get to spend much time in the HBO series, but still had enough screen time to prove she had warm relationships with her father.

What’s important here is that the only thing Sarah was really worried about before she died was whether she had enough time to have Joel’s favorite watch fixed by the time his birthday comes (he can be seen wearing that watch 25 years later).

Tommy’s line, in its turn, suggests Joel has now got what he wanted after years of grieving his only child, and both are now reunited in the afterworld.

Gabriel Luna Breaks Down on the Emotional Tommy/Joel Scene in Episode 3

The actor, who portrays Tommy in The Last of Us’ TV adaptation, admitted he’d struggled with the level of emotions the scene of Tommy’s goodbye to Joel required.

However, he then revealed in an interview with Los Angeles Times that it was easy to connect to his character since “I’ve been to a lot of funerals in my life so it felt very familiar”.

“I remember being the only one in that chapel, walking up to my grandfather’s coffin, and that’s what I had in my mind when I was shooting the scene … the young lady gives me the rag to wash [Joel’s] body, and she exits. Now I’m the only one in there. But as I’m walking up to Joel’s body, that’s what I was thinking of — my grandpa and being the only one there”, Luna added.

When Is The Last of Us Next Episode Being Released?
