Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz's Buffy reunion at the Emmys came with shade
Thirty years after a tiny blonde first walked into Sunnydale High, Buffy and Angel shared a stage again. Naturally, someone got staked.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited at the Emmys to present Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie — their first public reunion in nine years, complete with a red-carpet hug that instantly aged a generation of us into dust.
The bit
The pair opened by roasting their own show's premise: a teenage girl, chosen by fate, in love with a vampire carrying a couple hundred years of regret and a 226-year age gap that absolutely nobody flagged in 1997. Gellar noted, for those keeping track at home, that when the show premiered she had "just turned two." Sure. Fine. Whatever she's doing, it's working.
Then came the money exchange. "You know, Sarah, I always thought Buffy and Angel would end up together," Boreanaz mused, walking directly into it.
About that shade
For the three of you who missed the saga: Gellar spent years developing a Buffy revival with Chloé Zhao, a pilot was actually filmed, and then the whole thing was quietly dusted. Gellar hasn't been quiet about why — she's described a studio executive on the project who was, in her words, "not only not a fan of the original," but proud of never having watched it. An executive bragging about not watching Buffy while overseeing Buffy is the most Hollywood sentence ever assembled, and I include "Cats (2019)" in that assessment.
So "I guess we won't find out" wasn't a joke. It was a receipt, read aloud, on network television, in formal wear.
The part that wasn't funny
The duo also paused the bit to honor the people missing from the anniversary. The past two years have been brutal for this cast: Michelle Trachtenberg died in February 2025 at 39, Nicholas Brendon this past March at 54, and Anthony Stewart Head — Giles himself — in June at 72. Gellar called it a tough stretch for a beloved cast and crew, and said they felt lucky to have known and worked with such people.
Thirty years of Sunnydale, honored in ninety seconds: one eulogy, one grudge, zero closure on the ship. Honestly? On brand.
