Indifference and unprofessionalism, not a lack of talent or ideas, are to blame for this.

The reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was to star Sarah Michelle Gellar as the new Slayer's mentor, was considered one of the most promising projects of 2026.

The pilot episode had been filmed, and the actors had shared joyful photos from the set when the project was suddenly canceled. Now, for the first time, Sarah Michelle Gellar has publicly revealed what really happened.

The reason turned out not to be creative differences or weak material, but rather a specific person who, according to Gellar, proudly reminded everyone that he never watched the original.

According to Sarah Michelle Gellar, the news of the project's cancellation came at the worst possible time. She was preparing to walk the red carpet for another movie's premiere, and Chloé Zhao was supposed to be heading to the Oscars as a nominee for Hamnet:

“No one saw this coming, including the head of Searchlight. I got the call as we were stepping onto stage for the premiere of their own movie. And it's also the weekend of Chloé [Zhao] going to the Oscars as a best director nominee for Hamnet. [...] That says something.”

However, the most significant revelation concerns the inner workings of the project:

“We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn't for him.

That's very hard when you're taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to me and Chloé. So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn't watch it.”

'New Sunnydale' Pilot Was Considered to Be Flawed, and Chloé Zhao's Approach Was Deemed Unsuitable

Even before Gellar's announcement, rumors had circulated in the press that the pilot episode of New Sunnydale was far from perfect. Hulu reportedly found Chloé Zhao's emotional, auteur-driven style to be incompatible with the Buffy universe.

Rather than invest in costly reshoots, the network canceled the project. The pilot's fate is now uncertain – it will likely never be released, unless it resurfaces as archival footage years from now.

If the franchise is ever revived, it will be taken over by a different showrunner.

What Was 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale' Supposed to Be About?

The series was supposed to take place 25 years after the original show's finale. The town of Sunnydale had been rebuilt after being destroyed by dark forces and was once again teeming with life.

However, evil was returning, and it fell to Nova (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), a withdrawn 16-year-old high school student, to confront it. Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) acted as her mentor, an experienced Slayer passing on her knowledge to the next generation.

Fans were hoping for cameos from other beloved characters, and director Chloé Zhao promised to preserve the spirit of the original series while bringing her own visual style to the story.
