One of the most highly anticipated detective series of 2026 is Scarpetta starring Nicole Kidman. It is already being called a major event – not just because of the stellar casting, but also because of the source material.
The adaptation of Patricia Cornwell's cult novels about forensic scientist Kay Scarpetta was conceived in the 1990s but has only now had the opportunity to come to fruition.
Amazon is so confident in the series' success that it ordered two seasons, even before the premiere. Here's when the series will be released, what it's about, and which other stars will appear.
'Scarpetta' Release Date & Streaming Platform
The first season of Scarpetta premieres on March 11, 2026. All episodes will be available on Amazon Prime Video on the same day.
The series was initially announced in 2021, but development was delayed. Blumhouse Television and Jamie Lee Curtis's production company, Comet Pictures, acquired the adaptation rights, but production didn't begin immediately.
In 2023, Nicole Kidman was cast in the lead role, and it was announced that Jamie Lee Curtis would play her sister.
'Scarpetta' Is Based on a Book Series of the Same Name by Patricia Cornwell
In 1990, writer and journalist Patricia Cornwell published Postmortem, the first novel featuring forensic scientist Kay Scarpetta.
Since then, Cornwell has published more than 25 novels featuring Scarpetta, who has become one of the most famous figures in detective fiction. Scarpetta is based on Marcella Farinelli Fierro, the former chief medical examiner of Virginia.
In 1992, Columbia Pictures acquired the rights, but the project stalled. In 2009, Fox 2000 planned to launch a film series starring Angelina Jolie, but those plans fell through as well.
Thus, the Nicole Kidman series represents the first serious attempt to bring Scarpetta to the screen.
What Will 'Scarpetta' Be About?
Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a brilliant forensic pathologist, returns to her home state of Virginia to resume her position as chief medical examiner.
The official goal is to help solve an old crime that once made her famous. However, her past haunts her, and that very case now threatens her life.
The creators promise a dual storyline. Flashbacks will show the late 1990s when a young Scarpetta was starting her career. In the present, we'll see her return and reconnect with old colleagues as she attempts to unravel the intricacies of her past.
In addition to the professional storyline, the series will feature a personal drama. Scarpetta must mend her relationship with her sister, Dorothy, whom she hasn't spoken to in years due to past grievances.
To prepare for the role, Nicole Kidman studied forensic science fundamentals, attending lectures and observing specialists at work.
