And here's why the post-credits scene isn't just for comic relief.

On February 27, Scream 7 was released – the latest installment in the cult slasher franchise in which Sidney Prescott must once again face the ghosts of her past.

The seventh installment's finale was action-packed, with the revelation of three killers, hints about the surviving Stu, and a post-credits scene.

We explore who was hiding behind the mask and whether the legendary maniac from the first film survived.

Here's Who the Killer Is in 'Scream 7' & How You Could Have Figured It Out Right Away

Scream 7 features three killers: Karl Gibbs, Marco Davis, and Jessica Bowden. Karl is an escaped mental hospital patient who appears in Sidney's cafeteria at the beginning of the movie. Marco is an employee of the same institution who confirmed that Stu was Karl's neighbor.

Jessica is Sidney's neighbor and friend and the mother of the deceased Lucas. After reading Sidney's autobiography, Jessica was "inspired" to kill her domineering husband. She was committed to a mental hospital and then decided that the original Sidney was no longer needed. It was time to create Sidney 2.0 out of her daughter, Tatum.

Jessica becomes a suspect because she knew the cafeteria password and easily entered the Evans house. Lucas' interest in true crime likely stems from his mother's obsession.

Marco could be caught because he spoke too confidently about Stu – if we assume that the resurrected AI maniac was fake, then Marco became the main suspect.

Did Stu Survive, and Which Other Maniacs Were Resurrected With the Help of AI?

Stu is the only serial killer in the franchise's history not to be finished off with a headshot. Rumors of his possible return have circulated for years, and Kevin Williamson decided to play with them.

In Scream 7, Karl taunts the audience by asking who even believed Stu was resurrected? However, it's quickly revealed that the documents proving his death have mysteriously disappeared from the archives.

There's no explanation for this. Either Stu is truly alive, or Jessica and her accomplices destroyed the documents to further their cover story. This mystery will likely be explored in a potential eighth installment.

With Marco's help, he "resurrected" Stu, Debbie Salt from Scream 2, Roman Bridger from Scream 3, and the late Dewey.

What Does the Post-Credits Scene Mean?

In the finale, Gale lets Mindy deliver the report in her place. Mindy has long dreamed of being an anchor. During the post-credits scene, Mindy repeatedly messes up her opening speech. When Chad finally gets a good take, he realizes he forgot to turn on the recording.

This isn't just a comedic moment – it hints at the future. In a potential Scream 8, Gale will probably continue to lead the project, but her younger assistants will handle the investigations and reporting.

It means that the generational shift hinted at in recent movies is finally becoming official.
