The Studio’s actor and helmer says you shouldn’t waste your time waiting for the most trivial plot twist in his Platonic.

Despite going for full diversity, modern TV series have some most frequent tropes to follow, and Seth Rogen’s 2023 comedy show is one of few to try and avoid it at all costs.

Featuring Rogen and his Neighbours co-star Rose Byrne in the leading roles, Apple TV+’s series Platonic follows two former best friends who suddenly reconnect decades later, trying to understand what led to their fallout back in the day.

As so many romantic comedies can’t stop proving to this day, the premise does sound like a love story between the two that realized they have feelings for each other.

However, that’s not what Rogen planned for the show — even though he does get why everyone is waiting for such a plot twist.

‘Platonic’ Won’t Follow “Precedent That ‘Friends’ Set”, Seth Rogen Says

Seth Rogen Explains 'Platonic' vs 'Friends' Debate:

Though the cult classic sitcom’s immense success was what many TV creators wanted for their shows, Seth Rogen feels like there’s a need for more modern TV pieces to break the “love story” rules that Friends once established.

“People are very fixated on this idea that we will one day get together. And I get why, honestly. Like, we grew up with a show called Friends, and they all f—ed each other. Every friend f—ed every other friend”, the actor said during his latest appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers (shared by Deadline), promoting Platonic’s season 2 that was released on August 6 on Apple TV+.

Apart from that, Rogen implied that Friends was kinda responsible for creating this sort of trope that now impedes creators to go further with much more different stories.

“Anyway, I get why people think we’re gonna have sex because of the f— precedent that Friends set”, Rogen added.

‘Platonic’ Co-Creator Says “There’s No Suspense” About Sylvia and Will’s Love Story

Considering that the series was bombarded with the same question over and over again ever since its first season was released, it’s not really surprising that another production team member addressed the issue long before Seth Rogen talked about it as well.

Pretty much the same answer was delivered to Platonic’s fans by the series’ co-creator and showrunner Francesca Delbanco who suggested that there won’t be that long-anticipated plot twist in the show anyway.

“They’re just buddies. We thought it was important to try to represent that, the possibility that men and women can be friends with each other and those friendships can provide something friendships with your own gender can’t provide”, she told Deadline at the TV Contenders event earlier this year.
