Severance Season 1 Has ‘Weird’ Reference to Steven Spielberg’s Hit Horror

The many Easter eggs that Severance has kept a secret all this time include a line from Jaws. It was fun for Dan Erickson to put in the show — we bet you’d never guess which one it is.
Apple TV+ ’s sci-fi hit series Severance has got many pop cultural sources for inspiration on its way, but it also borrowed something unexpected from the genre classic by Steven Spielberg.
The show has recently gone through another wave of raving success thanks to its second season and is currently going into the third one’s full production mode, but some secrets from the very first instalment, released back in 2022, still keep unveiling themselves even now.
Naturally, even a short line belonging to Mark Scout’s always straightforward sister Devon also was a direct reference only Jaws’ diehard fans could have noticed.
Severance’s Subtle Nod to Steven Spielberg’s Jaws That No One Noticed
It might be Devon’s usual outspoken manner of communication that made Severance’s season 1 viewers not pay much attention to a specific phrase, but Erickson actually put it into the script as some kind of homage to Spielberg’s 1975 sci-fi horror.
In the show’s season 1 episode 5 titled The Grim Barbarity of Optics and Design, Mark and Devon go to a birthing retreat where the latter wants her daughter to be born; there she eventually meets another future mom, Gabby, and, upon seeing the latter’s much fancier suite, Devon asks her “You rich?”.
If you have seen Jaws more than once, you might remember the scene with Roy Scheider’s Chief Brody asking Richard Dreyfuss’ Matt Hooper the exact same thing.
What the Jaws Line Is There For in Severance Season 1, Explained by Dan Erickson
Even though Severance has likely made an impression to give a special meaning to every single detail, not all of them actually have a meaning at all.
“I just always thought that was a funny line. It's just a weird thing to ask someone out of nowhere! It doesn't mean anything, it's just a reference, but I don't I've never seen anybody pick up on that specific thing”, Dan Erickson recently revealed in an interview with BuzzFeed.
