A rave post about the Dark Matter finale turned into a count of identical rave posts. The suspicion is now part of watching Apple shows.

Dark Matter wrapped its second season on October 30 with a 92% season score) on Rotten Tomatoes, up from 81% for season one — Blake Crouch's multiverse thriller with Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly got better, and plenty of the praise flooding Reddit this week is surely sincere. The problem is what happened under one of those praise posts, titled "Dark Matter delivered," on r/television:

"Worth pointing out though that there have been half a dozen or more of this exact post praising the show. Seems pretty obvious it's marketing backed."

A second commenter widened the charge from one show to a pattern:

"I have noticed that Apple in particular seems to be aggressive in creating Astro-turfed social media about their shows, especially on Reddit. Pluribus was the most obvious."

None of this is proven, and Apple hasn't commented on astroturfing accusations. What's verifiable is the shape of the suspicion: viewers counting near-identical enthusiasm posts and treating the count itself as evidence.

The expensive irony

Apple's catalog is the reason the accusation stings instead of sliding off. Severance led all shows at this year's Emmys, Silo and Foundation anchor the genre, Vince Gilligan's Pluribus — the one commenters call "the most obvious" plant — just collected six Emmys, including Rhea Seehorn's lead-actress win. These are series that generate real evangelists, the kind who write unprompted "this show delivered" posts at midnight.

Which is exactly what makes the alleged tactic self-defeating. If even some promotional posts are seeded among the genuine ones, every genuine one inherits the suspicion — and a platform whose shows earn organic devotion ends up with an audience that side-eyes devotion itself.

Apple built the one streaming catalog whose praise doesn't need to be faked. Its fans now spend finale week debating whether the praise is fake.

The part that affects everyone else

Reddit's word-of-mouth has quietly become the biggest recommendation engine in television — "what should I watch" threads move more viewers than most reviews. Astroturfing allegations, true or not, poison that well one counted duplicate at a time. The practical test the thread settled on works regardless of the truth: a real recommendation can usually explain why in specifics; six posts with the same adjectives and the same structure can't. That's a sadder media literacy than anyone wanted for finale week, and it's now standard equipment for reading a rave.
