Don’t act surprised, that relationship was never meant to be.

Sex Education season 4 was a big disappointment for many fans, and there are a lot of reasons for that. Well, we are not going to get into all of them, but we will focus on the main one. And yes, of course it's the way Otis and Maeve's romance worked out in the show's finale. Or rather, how it did not.

Although the ending of the show was pretty surprising, the fact that Otis and Maeve would not end up together should not have come as such a shock.

The most observant fans may have felt that the writers were going to break them up at the end, but probably wanted to have some faith in pure teenage love. And they had their reasons.

Season 1 gave us so many clues that they would eventually fall in love, but for all the wrong reasons. They didn't have much in common, and the only thing that brought them together and made them closer to each other was their illegal sex advice practice.

The best time for them to get together would have been season 2, but instead the writers decided to go in another direction and let them grow apart. It wasn't until the end of season 3 that they finally confessed their mutual attraction and decided it was time to build a relationship.

Only it was too late. Throughout the entire run of the show, they didn't realize that they wanted completely different things in life. They weren't ready for a happily-ever-after because they weren't even on the same page for a happy life in the present.

And then Isaac and Ruby came into the picture and showed us how great they both could be in a relationship with someone else and not with each other. Ruby was honest and pure and an excellent choice for Otis. And Isaac comforted Maeve so much better than Otis ever did.

So we come to the conclusion that Netflix did indeed set up their relationship for failure. By introducing them into the relationship at the worst time ever, the writers made it impossible for their romance to succeed.

Sex Education season 4 is now available on Netflix.
