Ask Dolly Parton for life advice — and everyone does, constantly, for decades — and you will get the same answer she's been handing out since the wigs were smaller.
It fits on a napkin. Fans call it simply "a Dolly quote." And at 80, she is still saying it, word for word.

That's it. That's the whole doctrine. No morning routine, no ice bath, no seven-step framework. Know who you are — then be it deliberately, not by accident.
Where it came from
Turns out the line has a mother, literally. Dolly has explained that her mom, Avie Lee, raised her on a phrase borrowed from Hamlet: "To thine own self be true."
"There's a whole lot of meaning in that phrase," Parton said. "Because I've always tried to stay true to me. And always, when people ask me for advice, that's kind of what I tell them." The napkin version is just Shakespeare after fifty years of Tennessee processing — and honestly, it's an upgrade.
She's also blunt about why the advice needs saying at all: "You got to know who you are because so many people try to emulate or copy somebody else."
Fifty years of receipts
The wild part is that she's actually lived it, in an industry built on making people someone else:
- Executives told her early on to tone down the look; the look stayed and became a $450 million empire with its own theme park.
- She's kept the accent, the songwriting, and the one-liners through every trend cycle since vinyl.
- Her hard limit, in her own words: "Don't ever sacrifice who you are, your principles and your morals and your values to just try to get ahead in business. It ain't worth it."
Why the line still lands
Most advice ages like milk. This one has survived fifty years because it isn't really advice about success at all — it's advice about not disappearing.
"Find out who you are" is the hard part. "Do it on purpose" is the dare. Dolly's been taking her own dare since roughly 1967, and the results speak in platinum.
