The world of animation changed forever when the first Shrek movie premiered in 2001. The grumpy ogre, his friend Donkey, and the rest of the quirkiest cast ever became fan-favorite heroes, and the romantic story of Shrek and Fiona inspired many real-life love stories.

The first movie made sure there’s going to be more, so then Shrek 2 (2002), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010) followed, cementing the love towards the franchise. However, it’s been a while since the new movie was announced but never came out. And it’s about to change soon.

While the future of Shrek 5 was theoretically confirmed after Shrek 2 premiere in 2004 (with the release planned for 2013), it still took many years to come closer to a real release date. The long-awaited sequel will finally hit theaters on December 23, 2026.

Originally slated for a July 2026 release, the film was pushed back after Minions 3 claimed the summer slot, and is now scheduled to debut on July 1, 2026. No official reason has been given for the delay, but it may actually benefit the movie.

While Minions 3 is expected to do well as a summer family blockbuster, Shrek 5 is more than just another installment: it marks the first new entry in the franchise in 16 years and coincides with the 25th anniversary of the original Shrek film.

Shrek 5: Casting News

One of the biggest questions surrounding Shrek 5 was whether or not the original cast would return. And fans of the franchise can rest easy knowing that the beloved trio is officially back.

Eddie Murphy, one of the franchise's most vocal supporters in recent years, has confirmed that he'll be reprising his role as Donkey. Mike Myers will also return as the iconic ogre himself, which comes as no surprise. The biggest uncertainty was Cameron Diaz, who had taken a break from acting in recent years. Thankfully, she's come out of retirement and will reprise her role as Princess Fiona.

Antonio Banderas hasn't officially signed on yet, but there's a good chance he'll return as the dashing Puss in Boots. A major new addition to the cast is Zendaya, who will voice Shrek and Fiona's teenage daughter, Felicia.

What Will Shrek 5 Be About?

Despite a number of small script-related updates over the years, no real story details have been revealed about the upcoming movie. With Shrek and Fiona settling down after Shrek 4, something big would have to happen to keep them from living happily ever after.
