What Is the New Release Date for' Shrek 5' & Why Was It Postponed?
Recently, it was announced that the release date of Shrek 5 was pushed back from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027. The supposed reason is to increase box office receipts.
At the end of 2026, Shrek 5 would have faced tough competition. Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part Three and Ice Age 6 are all scheduled to premiere on December 18, just five days before the initial premiere date of Shrek 5.
It seems that Universal Pictures wants to make Shrek 5 a summer blockbuster. It has a good chance – an entire generation grew up with Shrek, and many of them are now raising their own kids, who will most likely accompany them to the movies.
However, there will still be some competition: How to Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled for release on June 11, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is planned for release on June 25.
This is not the first time the premiere of Shrek 5 has been postponed. Initially, it was supposed to be released on July 1, 2026. Then, the release date was moved to December.
What Will 'Shrek 5' Be About?
Although there is little information about the plot, it is known that this is a direct continuation of the previous movies and takes place after the finale of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Apparently, the focus will be on Shrek and Fiona's relationship with their daughter, Felicia.
Who Is in the Main Cast of 'Shrek 5'?
All of the original actors will reprise their roles. Mike Myers will voice Shrek, Cameron Diaz will voice Fiona, and Eddie Murphy will return to give his voice to Donkey.
It is still unclear if Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as Puss in Boots in the fifth installment. However, in a 2022 interview, the actor confirmed his participation.
Zendaya will play the daughter of Shrek and Fiona, the teenage ogre Felicia.

After Shrek 5 is released, a Donkey spin-off will follow, with Eddie Murphy reprising his role. There's no release date yet.
