Renewed before season 3 even aired: Shrinking season 4 targets a 2027 release date
Apple greenlit more therapy a full day before anyone had seen the new season — and the show has spent 2026 proving why that wasn't reckless.
Here's a level of institutional confidence most shows never see: Apple TV renewed Shrinking for season 4 on January 27 — one day before season 3 premiered. Not after strong numbers. Not after a finale cliffhanger forced their hand. Before a single new episode was public, for a show Apple's own press release brands "one of TV's best-written comedies."
Eight months later, the bet looks obvious. Season 3 ran January 28 through April 8 and threw everything at the wall — Brett Goldstein returning as Louis, Cobie Smulders as Jimmy's new maybe-person Sofi, and a murderers' row of guest stars: Michael J. Fox, Jeff Daniels, Candice Bergen. Fox's casting carried real weight, playing a Parkinson's patient opposite Harrison Ford's Paul, whose own diagnosis anchored the season.

Where season 4 stands
- The target: a 2027 release, per the renewal announcements — no date yet.
- The status: cameras are already rolling. Production on season 4 began in mid-May 2026 around Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Altadena, with the season expanding to twelve episodes.
- The stakes for Ford: at 83, he landed his first-ever Emmy nomination for playing Paul — the second-oldest nominee in his category's history — and was back on the ballot at this month's ceremony.
Ford, for his part, has started talking about the show in decidedly final terms. At an Apple press day in February, he mused about retirement:
"if it was all over here, that would be sufficient."
The Bill Lawrence factory hums along
Shrinking's early renewal is also a data point in a larger pattern: co-creator Bill Lawrence currently has an absurd 2026 slate — the Scrubs revival on ABC, HBO's Rooster, Bad Monkey and Ted Lasso back at Apple — and Warner Bros. TV keeps both Lawrence and co-creator Goldstein under overall deals. Jason Segel, the third co-creator, stars. When one comedy brain trust supplies this much of a streamer's lineup, a season 4 order sight-unseen isn't generosity. It's supply-chain management.
