Sing Sing and 4 Other Movies More Deserving of a Best Picture Nom Than Emilia Pérez

Some of these great films didn't receive a single nomination at all.
Emilia Pérez is the leader in the number of nominations this year – the musical has as many as 13, including for Best Picture.
With such an impressive list of noms, Emilia Perez is hated by a large number of people who have seen the movie. While critics gave the film a 72% score on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers dropped their score to 17%.
We remember outstanding films that undeservedly did not receive a Best Picture nomination (or any nominations at all) this year.
1. Challengers, 2024
Luca Guadagnino is a director whose films regularly appear at the Oscars. This year, his sports drama Challengers generated more buzz than his previous hit Call Me by Your Name.
Critics and viewers were sure that if Challengers didn't get a Best Picture nomination, the soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross wouldn't go unnoticed. However, the Academy made an unexpected decision – the film starring Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor did not receive a single Oscar nomination.
2. Sing Sing, 2023
Sing Sing tells about a real-life prison program called Rehabilitation Through the Arts. One of the inmates joins a local theater group where he works on a comedy production. The cast is almost entirely made up of real ex-convicts who participated in the program.
It is likely that director Greg Kwedar will end up taking home the statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay, but viewers feel that Sing Sing totally deserved a nomination for Best Picture.
3. All We Imagine as Light, 2024
In the international category, the absence of the Indian drama All We Imagine as Light is surprising. What's more, the film could well compete for the title of Best Picture.
At the Cannes Film Festival, the movie won the Grand Prix, and at the Golden Globes it was nominated in two categories – Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film.
The viewers are gradually immersed in the lives of two Mumbai nurses with opposite characters. Each of them has a painful secret of her own – and each concerns her beloved man.
4. The Girl With the Needle, 2024
The most popular among the nominees for Best International Film might be Emilia Pérez, but absolutely all the films in this category are strong works that deserve awards. The Girl with the Needle could also compete in the main category.
Karoline gets pregnant by the boss of a weaving factory and ends up on the street. The desperate woman turns to Dagmar, a respected woman who helps find foster homes for children. Soon Karoline learns the shocking truth about Dagmar.
5. Thelma, 2024
For his debut film, director Josh Margolin decided to pay homage to his grandmother, who once almost fell for a scam.
Thelma is a movie inspired by a real case about a feisty old lady who gave her life savings to criminals. But the woman refuses to give up, so Thelma decides to find the crooks and take the money herself.
Thelma was called one of the main films of 2024 – a touching comedy about justice and old friendship. In the end, the movie starring charming June Squibb did not receive a single nomination.
