The taste of traditional Southern food in your own kitchen.

Even though there’s a variety of extremely delicious meals coming from different cuisines from all over the world, sometimes it’s a desire to explore your own country’s cuisine that suddenly comes along. Like many other countries, the US can boast of diverse food culture since its traditions vary depending on a region.

In the south, the baked beans have become one of the most popular side dishes, so keep the recipe below for the next time you’re having a BBQ with your friends.

Ingredients: 500 g of navy beans (or other white beans, pre-soaked), 200 g of chopped bacon, 1 large chopped onion, 3 tablespoons of molasses, 2 tablespoons of mustard, 1/3 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, 2 cups of water or chicken broth.

Soak the beans overnight in cold water. Drain the water.

In a large pot, fry the bacon until crispy, then add the onion and fry until translucent.

Add the beans, molasses, mustard, brown sugar, salt, peppers, and water or broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, covered, over low heat for 2–3 hours or until the beans are tender. Add water if necessary to keep the beans covered with liquid.

Serve hot as a side dish with barbecue or as a stand-alone meal.
