The finale of Squid Game had many surprising moments, but the most unexpected was Cate Blanchett's appearance. Here's who she played and why her appearance in the Squid Game universe may not be limited to one cameo.

The sixth and final episode of Squid Game Season 3 featured an unexpected cameo – the Oscar-winning Cate Blanchett. We'll tell you who she played and how her role is connected to David Fincher.

Cate Blanchett Is The Recruiter for the American Game

In the third season of Squid Game, the winner of the deadly tournament turned out to be the newborn daughter of Kim Jun-hee and Lee Myung-gi.

Seong Gi-hun sacrificed himself to save the child. Through his sacrifice, Gi-hun presumably restored In-ho's faith in humanity. Because of this, In-ho went to Los Angeles to give Gi-hun's money to his daughter.

After meeting the girl, In-ho stopped in an alley where a mysterious woman in a business suit was playing ddakji with a man. The same game was used by the recruiter who died in Season 2 to recruit players.

The stranger in the alley was played by Cate Blanchett, and she is clearly a recruiter for the American games.

In Season 1, it was hinted that the games were being held at an international level. After Gi-hun's sacrifice, In-ho might have considered the need to destroy the project. However, he realizes that it is nearly impossible given the scope of the tournaments.

Netflix Is Reportedly Working on the 'Squid Game US' Spinoff

Cate Blanchett's foray into the Squid Game universe will likely extend beyond a mere cameo.

Since 2024, there have been rumors that Netflix is preparing an American version of the show, which will reportedly be directed by David Fincher. However, these rumors have not yet been officially confirmed.

The Cate Blanchett Scene Wasn't a Hint at a Spinoff, Hwang Dong-hyuk Says

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, was also unaware of Netflix's plans. He claims that the scene with Cate Blanchett was not intended as a hint about a spinoff. Rather, it was meant to show that even if one link in the chain is destroyed, the system continues to exist.

In an interview with THR, Hwang said:

“I wanted to leave it on a note highlighting the fact that these systems, even if one comes down, it's not easy to dismantle the whole system – it will always repeat itself. [...] And I wrote that scene wanting an impactful ending for the show, not in order to open rooms for anything else.”

He also explained why Cate Blanchett was chosen for the role:

“It's a very short scene. There's only one line, so we needed someone who had that level of presence and charisma to completely dominate the screen in that instant. And that naturally led me to Cate Blanchett.”

As for Squid Game US, we can only wait for official announcements from Netflix, which should come soon.
