Dave Filoni gave us the best gift for Star Wars Day, The Tales of the Underworld, and it includes an unexpected surprise. Here's why it's a must-see for all Star Wars fans.

On Star Wars Day, the animated series Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld premiered. Dave Filoni's anthology tells stories about the criminal world of the cult universe.

The first season told about Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano, the second was dedicated to Barriss Offee and Morgan Elsbeth, and in Tales of the Underworld it is the turn of Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane.

Even after the release of Tales of the Jedi, it became clear that Dave Filoni had found a way to continue The Clone Wars after the series' finale.

Tales Is the Star Wars Franchise's Best Anthology With Unusual Structure

The fates of Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano were already known – the former died twenty years ago in Revenge of the Sith, and Ahsoka appeared in the second season of The Mandalorian, so the anthology was just filling in the blanks in their biographies.

Tales of the Empire was where the structure began to change. While the Morgan Elsbeth episodes followed the pattern of the first season, the three Barriss Offee episodes explored her life after Order 66.

Tales of the Empire finally satisfied fans' curiosity and allowed Filoni to bring to a logical conclusion one of the storylines left unresolved by the premature end of The Clone Wars. In Tales of the Underworld, he decided to use a similar technique, but with a pleasant surprise.

The Bane episodes again tell three stories from different periods of the character's life, united by a common topic. In this case, his relationship with a childhood friend named Nero.

The Asajj Ventress episodes show the evolution of Filoni's ideas. This time, Dave did not simply tie up a loose end (Asajj Ventress' story was completed in Christie Golden's novel Dark Disciple) – Filoni decided to correct one of his earlier plot choices.

The episodes continue the Asajj's story after the end of Dark Disciple. Mother Talzin resurrects Asajj shortly after Quinlan Vos and Obi-Wan bury her body, saying that her death should not have happened.
