The Philippou brothers' new film impressed even Stephen King – and that's reason enough to pay attention to it. Here's the horror flick that scared the author.

The Life of Chuck, the most recent Stephen King adaptation, is a rare example of a non-horror movie based on the writer's work. Nevertheless, King keeps a close eye on new horror releases and shares the best of it on his social networks.

Stephen King Praises 'Bring Her Back'

This time, King shared his thoughts on the new project Bring Her Back by Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors of Talk to Me. King wrote:

“I saw a wonderfully gruesome horror movie called BRING HER BACK this afternoon. Thoughtful, textured, and scary as hell.”

What Is 'Bring Her Back' About?

After losing their father, Andy and his visually impaired sister, Piper, become orphans and are assigned a guardian. Their guardian turns out to be Laura, a woman who seems good-natured but a bit eccentric.

She recently lost her daughter, who drowned in a pool, and is having a hard time dealing with the loss. After moving to a new home, Andy begins to suspect that something is wrong with Laura as well as with Oliver, a mute boy whom she has also adopted.

Like 'Talk to Me', 'Bring Her Back' Is a Horror With a Strong Dramatic Subtext

The Philippou brothers' first movie, Talk to Me, was about a ceramic hand that, when touched, summons a ghost with whom you can talk. The plot about spiritualist séances turned into a drama about teenage drug addiction, telling the story of teenagers escaping a traumatic reality by entering another world.

The script for Bring Her Back was written almost simultaneously with the debut, so it's no surprise that the movies are similar.

While the Philippous were developing the film, they experienced the deaths of several loved ones. The directors asked themselves: What is a person capable of when experiencing strong grief?

'Bring Her Back' Will Make Even the Experienced Horror Fans Uncomfortable

The directors excel at both drama and horror. Bring Her Back features many gruesome and graphic scenes of violence. Instruments of torture include a knife with a melon on the tip, a pool filled with rainwater, teeth, nails and much more.

The Philippou brothers eschew jump scares in favor of emotional roller coasters. In one scene, Laura helps the children recover from their father's funeral. In another scene, she gaslights Andy and wanders around the apartment like a ghost.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Bring Her Back'?

  • Bring Her Back has 89% from critics and 79% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the horror movie has a score of 7.6/10.
