‘Stick’ Could’ve Been Next ‘Ted Lasso’ If 1 Major Mistake Didn’t Kill It

What decision can completely obliterate the promising sport series? Stick's fans have an answer. Here's what the viewers are saying.
When it comes to feel-good sports shows, Ted Lasso set the gold standard that's hard to beat. Many have tried to replicate its success, but few have succeeded. Take Apple TV+'s latest sports drama, which is about to wrap up its first season. Stick had all the ingredients to become the next big hit: it's a story about an underdog in a major sport.
The main issue: a lot of unlikeable characters. Fans are especially mad about Santi and Zero.
‘Stick’ Writing Failed the Zero Character
Viewers can't stand how Zero comes across as a walking stereotype rather than a real person. Many describe the character as mean, bratty, and honestly just hard to watch.
“The show is predictable and cliche, but she/they are so unlikable that it [is] sucking the joy out of the show. You can have character growth but they need something to grow off of and they offer nothing,” Redditor BohemianJack said.
The bigger problem: Zero is way older than Santi, making their relationship feel uncomfortable.
“I’m struggling with the ages of Zero and Santi. They said he’s 16 or 17. She’s clearly over 21 as she was drinking in the last episode,” Redditor FreyaDeKarma pointed out.
The show makes it worse by revealing that Zero was basically Pryce's puppet all along. The washed-up golfer used Zero to manipulate Santi on the course, feeding him advice while pretending it was the teen's own thinking.
‘Stick’ Did Not Makes Us Care for the Protagonist
Zero isn't the only character that's hated by the viewers. Fans aren't thrilled with Santi either. While some viewers warmed up to Zero eventually, Santi remains a major sticking point for many. And how can you make people care about the show if they hate the main guy?
“I actually didn’t mind zero after a while, I love mitts and Owen Wilson. Santi though is the worst character I’ve ever seen, there’s nothing there to root for, or to even like. He insufferable, just complete douche and his moms no better,” Redditor Slayter_J shared.
Is ‘Stick’ Season 2 Happening?
As of now, nothing has officially been announced. But if the writers take the criticism to heart, Season 2 could address the issues that plagued the first outing and give the characters more nuance and development.
