Eleven made the only right decision to protect everyone.

The ending of Stranger Things left fans with many questions, one of the most disturbing being the fate of the pregnant women Dr. Kay used in her experiments.

The finale sidestepped this dark plotline, leaving viewers to speculate. In an interview with TheWrap, showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer finally revealed the tragic fate of these characters, setting the record straight.

What Happened in the 'Stranger Things' Finale?

In Season 5, Eleven and her friends won a decisive victory over Vecna and the Mind Flayer, thwarting Henry Creel's plan to bring the Void to Hawkins.

In this battle, Eleven was aided by her lab "sister," Kali Prasad (Eight), who sacrificed herself. After the battle, Eleven chose to remain in the Upside Down, presumably faking her death.

Although Mike found hints of her possible rescue, he could not prove it. Eleven's decision was influenced not only by personal tragedy, but also by her desire to end the cycle of abuse against children like herself.

What Did Dr. Kay Want to Do With the Pregnant Women?

Before her death, Kali revealed that after Dr. Brenner died, Dr. Kay continued his work. In search of a way to create new superhumans, she conducted inhumane experiments.

She transfused Eight's blood into pregnant women. Her goal was to produce children who would inherit psionic powers and become a new generation of mind-controlled weapons like Eleven, Henry, and Kali herself.

These women were kept in the dark and used as incubators to create living weapons, which condemned them and their future children to a life of suffering.

The Duffer Brothers Reveal What Happened to the Pregnant Women

The series vaguely revealed the fate of these women, leaving room for hope. However, the show's creators confirmed the worst-case scenario: Matt Duffer stated that all of the pregnant women who were subjected to Dr. Kay's experiments died:

“Either way, Eleven's choice is, I think, courageous and selfless, because even though she's having to leave her friends behind, she's protecting any other child from experiencing what she experienced.

Just look at what Kay was trying to do with all those pregnant women. All those pregnant women died because that blood did not work. But if that were to work, then you've got dozens of children who are going to grow up just like her and that are going to be turned into weapons and abused.”

Thus, Eleven's decision to remain in exile was fueled by her desire to break the cycle forever. As the last living carrier of such abilities, her blood could become the key to new experiments.
