The acclaimed video game 2022, about a cat in a cyberpunk city, is getting an animated movie adaptation.

Not all video games are suitable for a movie or TV adaptation for a variety of reasons, from the story to translating the gameplay into a non-interactive form, and many others.

Stray, however, is one of the few that fit the bill perfectly, as the adventures of a stray cat in a cyberpunk city already felt like an interactive movie, so making it into an actual film was apparently only a matter of time.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Annapurna Animation, which recently made a strong debut with the animated film Nimona, is developing an adaptation of the acclaimed video game with Chris Wedge, best known for directing the first Ice Age film, at the helm.

Robert Baird, one of the studio's founders, described the nuances of adapting such an unusual game into a movie format, as it doesn't even feature human characters, with the city populated entirely by robots.

He said that he sees it as a "buddy comedy about a cat and a robot," and believes that the fact that players experience their surroundings from a feline perspective is what made the game so popular in the first place.

While the unique nature of Stray may seem difficult to adapt into a conventional movie, Baird is confident that they know the "essence of the game and the key to telling the story."

Fans are excited to see what the studio will come up with, because despite Baird's statement that Stray might seem too unique to become a movie, they believe that it is perfect material.

As mentioned above, the lack of dialogue and the unconventional point of view from the cat's perspective already made it feel like an interactive film, so they are sure the studio will be able to pull it off.

No release date has been announced yet.
