Capcom's narcissist assassin wears a mask to protect his beauty. His actor has worn one since 2018 for reasons he's never fully explained. The casting director deserves a raise.

Street Fighter opened October 16 and took the weekend: an estimated $31 million domestic and $51 million worldwide, per TheWrap's Sunday numbers — the best domestic debut in franchise history. For scale, that's more than the openings of both previous live-action Street Fighter movies combined, even adjusted for inflation.

Kitao Sakurai's film, from Paramount and Legendary, stacks its roster with wrestlers, a UFC champion and comedians. The single most precise piece of casting, though, is Vega.

The mask casting itself

Vega — Spanish assassin, triple claw, porcelain mask worn so nobody damages the face — is played by Orville Peck, the South African-born country singer who has performed behind a fringed mask for eight years. The only place audiences have seen his face is Broadway: Peck unmasked for his 2025 run as the Emcee in Cabaret, a choice he framed carefully at the time.

"The mask is part of my expression personally as an artist."

— Orville Peck, to The New York Times, during his Cabaret run

Street Fighter is his feature film debut, and he came in with opinions. Peck grew up playing the game with his brothers, has talked about Vega's long-running queer-coded energy — he's an openly gay artist stepping into a character fans read that way for decades — and lobbied the director on priorities from day one.

"I think we really should show off the butt."

— Orville Peck, to Pride Source, on his first note to Kitao Sakurai

The rest of the roster

  • The leads: Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Callina Liang as Chun-Li.
  • The villain's bench: David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, 50 Cent as Balrog, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli — with Peck's Vega as Shadaloo's elite operative.
  • The wrestlers: Roman Reigns as Akuma, Cody Rhodes as Guile. UFC's Alexander Volkanovski plays Joe; NJPW's Hirooki Goto is E. Honda.
  • The rest: Jason Momoa (also producing) as Blanka, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Eric André as Don Sauvage, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki.

That lineup reads like a 1993 arcade cabinet's fever dream, which is the point: the film is set in 1993 and leans into the sillier corners of the lore instead of apologizing for them.

The 1994 movie put Kylie Minogue in fatigues and became a punchline. The 2026 one put a masked country singer in matador tights and became the franchise's biggest opening.

Don't miss: Some Street Fighter fans say Andrew Schulz is why they're skipping it — Miami Vice '85 cast him too

Legendary bought the Street Fighter rights in April 2023 with Capcom co-producing, and a $51 million global start on a video game brand this durable makes a sequel conversation close to automatic. If it happens, Vega traditionally comes back. The mask, presumably, stays on.
