The show was too good for DC to handle.

Summary:

  • Superman & Lois is The CW's superhero TV series that will premiere its final season this fall.
  • The show has been canceled despite being the second most watched show on the network.
  • According to The CW's president of entertainment, the cancellation of Superman & Lois has to do with the upcoming Superman movie.

The transformation at The CW has to be one of the most unexpected and impressive moves in recent television history. The network, widely known for producing original TV shows aimed at younger audiences, has gone in a different direction. Aiming to take its place among the "big four" networks, The CW is striving for profitability.

While some of its series have come to a natural end, others have been forced to end earlier than expected. Superman & Lois was definitely a show in the latter category. While it still had a lot of creative storytelling potential, it was simply too difficult and expensive to produce for it to remain unprofitable.

However, that wasn't the final reason for its cancellation.

Why Was Superman & Lois Canceled

On the one hand, the decision to cancel Superman & Lois seemed like a no-brainer given the new direction The CW was taking. Trying to make the network profitable, it was only a matter of time when they would get rid of the most expensive shows to produce, and Superman & Lois was always one of them.

On the other hand, the decision to cut it took longer than expected. As the second most-watched show after Walker, Superman & Lois was hard to let go of, not only for the viewers. As it turns out, the decision was made by Warner Bros. and not The CW. According to entertainment chief Brad Schwartz, it had to do with an upcoming James Gunn movie:

“They don’t want a competing Superman product in the marketplace,” he said to TheWrap.

While there aren't many details about how the decision was made on the part of Warner Bros., it's clear that it suited both the network and the studio. With all of The CW's other superhero dramas coming to an end, Superman & Lois was going to be an oddity on the network's schedule anyway.

No matter how good the show was, all Warner Bros. was doing was ripping off a band-aid that needed to come off sooner rather than later anyway. Fans of Tyler Hoechlin 's Clark Kent still have some time to emotionally prepare for him and Lois Lane's final journey, which begins this fall.

After that, the only Superman standing will be David Corenswet, who was cast after James Gunn decided to part ways with Henry Cavill. Another movie in the rebooted DC Universe, Superman: Legacy, is scheduled for release in 2025. So if you are willing to give a new version a chance, keep an eye out for the premiere.
