The main thing that makes any character or story believable is the gray area. When everything is black and white, good or bad, easy or impossible, it ceases to have any relation to the complexity of real life.
And although Supernatural never aimed for realism, the relationship between the characters felt very familiar to everyone watching, considering its premise.
From the brotherly dynamic between Dean and Sam to the relationships they had with all the bad guys, good guys and random side characters, the writers did a great job of making them human.
Unfortunately, this came at a price. Just like any other human being, Dean and Sam can't be called heroes without taking a quick look back at all the characters they've hurt or mistreated over the 15-season run of Supernatural.
Fans on the r/Supernatural subreddit have taken it upon themselves to pick out the worst of the worst.
Worst Things Dean and Sam Winchesters Have Done
According to the most upvoted answers in the thread, the bar for the Winchester brothers' decency was actually quite low. While there are many instances of misbehavior specific to one of the brothers, there is something (or someone, to be precise) that lumps both Dean and Same under the umbrella of jerk behavior.
The way the boys treated poor Kevin Tran, who had done nothing wrong but kept trying to help them, was one of the most outstanding answers. The fact that he could tell they were obsessed with how nice they were to him says everything about their real relationship better than anything else.
But it's not just Kevin, it's the way Sam and Dean perceived most of the people around them in general. They only cared about them when they needed something done to help their cause, and in the end they were willing to sacrifice those people to save each other.
Other than that, Sam's worst moment is considered to be when he killed the nurse at the end of season 4. Many feel that this fight changed the mood of the whole show, as it was the time when human vessels for demons ceased to matter at all, and not everyone could easily get behind that change.
Dean's, on the other hand, has to do with Gadreel. His kicking Cas out of the bunker when he needed Dean the most was one of the worst moments for the general audience to witness, and an absolutely soul-crushing one for all Destiel shippers.
Amy, the kitsune, and her death also gets an honorable mention in a discussion of Dean's misdeeds, although the general killing of the supernatural population is definitely something both brothers are guilty of.
