How did a Family Guy joke make its way into Supernatural?

How many people out there are actually fans of both Family Guy and Supernatural? Hard to tell, but if you are a fan of either of these shows, you might be surprised to know that Supernatural once referenced Family Guy.

You know how Family Guy loves to poke fun at, parody, or give a nod to popular movies and TV shows. Surprisingly, they somehow missed out on Supernatural, the long-running drama about two brothers hunting supernatural creatures.

However, Supernatural, having its fair share of humor, actually referenced Family Guy.

In the episode titled Goodbye Stranger of season 8, there's a hilarious moment that fans of both shows would instantly recognize. In one of the scenes, every time Meg, portrayed by Rachel Miner, speaks, Sam and Dean respond with a sarcastic "Shut up, Meg!"

Now, if you're scratching your head wondering why that's funny, this line is a direct homage to a recurring joke from Family Guy.

One of the show's running gags involves the Griffin family's teenage daughter, Meg. Poor Meg is often the butt of the family's jokes, especially when it comes to her dad, Peter Griffin.

Whenever Meg tries to voice her opinion or simply chime into a conversation, Peter's immediate response is a dismissive "Shut up, Meg!" It's become such a staple of the show that even non-viewers might have heard the phrase at some point.

While the "Shut up, Meg!" line has become iconic, it has also spilled over into real life for Mila Kunis, the actress who voices Meg Griffin. Walking down the street and suddenly hearing a stranger shout, "Shut up, Meg!" has become a somewhat regular occurrence for the actress.

In an interview on The Graham Norton Show back in 2013, Kunis shared a funny yet slightly awkward reality of her life. She revealed that she often hears the famous line yelled at her by passers-by.

While Supernatural gave a clear nod to Family Guy with their playful use of the line, there hasn't been any noticeable reference from Family Guy towards Supernatural.
