Get ready for one of the greatest mysteries in history.

The episode of Supernatural called Croatoan proudly holds the rank of not only one of the scariest, but also one of the best episodes in the entire history of the show. And deservedly so – the tension in this episode is so great it seeps through the screen.

The Winchesters arrive in yet another small town, the streets of which seems to be completely empty. The only thing that gives any clue as to what has happened is the mysterious inscription Croatoan on one of the trees.

Sam immediately recalls an old legend about an English colony whose inhabitants simply disappeared one day, leaving behind a tree with that same word. Just a coincidence? We don’t think so.

Mysterious disappearances are actually not rare, but none of them were as strange as what happened to the Roanoke Colony. About four hundred years ago, over a hundred people disappeared and that mystery still haunts many history buffs.

A group of people were to establish a settlement on the east coast of North America. Led by John White, they boarded a ship and embarked on a long journey.

It was the first English colony in North America that included women and children. In August 1587, more than a hundred people crossed the ocean and settled on Roanoke Island.

But when their supplies ran out, John White decided to go back to England with a small group of settlers. When White returned a couple years later, he found the settlement completely empty and abandoned.

The only hint to the settlers' fate was a pillar carved with the word Cro. Many researchers are certain that it means Croatoan – the name of the local Indian tribe.

However, in Supernatural, everything turned out to be much simpler. In the show, Croatoan is a demonic virus that is transmitted through blood from person to person, making the carrier incredibly evil and eager to kill all living things. Well, at least, this episode has some kind of answer to this mystery.
