NYPD must pay well.’

Summary:

  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is the longest-running installment of NBC's Law & Order franchise, created by Dick Wolf.
  • The show's main character, Olivia Benson, portrayed by Mariska Hargitay, has undergone many changes during its 25 years on screen, including the adoption of a son, Noah.
  • Fans have noted that the least believable part of the show so far has been Noah's 24/7 babysitter, which would cost Benson a fortune in real life.

No matter how many years go by, most thoughtful fans will find new details to discuss about their favorite shows. While some of these are related to interesting behind-the-scenes stories, others remain plot holes. Not too important to fix right away, but still a point of discussion.

In all 25 seasons of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Olivia Benson and the other detectives she works with have joked that they don't get paid nearly enough for what they do. However, the more fans look at the way her family is set up to function with such a demanding job, the less they understand her financial status.

Who is Olivia Benson?

Right now, Olivia Benson has reached the position of a captain, to which she was promoted in 2019. Although her salary must have increased because of this promotion, it's still hard to believe that she doesn't come from family wealth.

The strangest thing fans have noticed about Olivia Benson's spending isn't related to anything she wears or buys. In fact, the only thing she seems to splurge on is her son Noah's safety and upbringing, which is admirable but hard to call realistic given the current babysitter rates.

Considering that Noah's babysitter, Lucy, does everything a real live-in nanny would do, she must either have a very charitable heart or, more likely, a huge need for money that Olivia Benson's hectic work schedule fully covers. Being on call 24/7 isn't easy, but Lucy always finds a way to help, and that's why she's so important.

Many people believe that there are no irreplaceable people, but realistically, Lucy would have been just that. Coming and going as soon as Olivia utters a word, being willing to hide Noah at the risk of her own life and the lives of her family, and doing all of this for an hourly wage is both incredible and ridiculous.

The only problem is that Lucy had to say goodbye to the Benson family. For now, Olivia's new babysitter is Martha, and while we don't know much about her, we do know that if she's up to the standard that Lucy has set in the past, she must be a true professional as well.
