How ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 6 Threw Logic Out The Window: Plot Holes Fans Can’t Forgive

The Handmaid's Tale forgot its own rules in Season 6. What went wrong and why are die-hard fans still mad about the show's finale? Here's what you need to know.
The Handmaid's Tale wrapped up its six-season run earlier this year, bringing closure to the dystopian saga that fans have been following since 2017. However, not everyone was thrilled with how things wrapped up.
The main issue: consistency. The show established clear rules about how its dystopian society functioned, who held power, how the borders worked, and the consequences for those who rebelled. In its rush to tie everything up, however, Season 6 heavily disregarded these established boundaries.
The End Of An Era For ‘The Handmaid's Tale’: What Went Wrong?
In Season 1, characters risked execution just to smuggle out a single note. This required underground networks and months of planning. Fast forward to Season 6, and June (literally the most wanted person in Gilead, mind you) is crossing heavily militarized borders as if it's no big deal.
I get it: the writers wanted to give every character their moment and wrap everything up nicely (even getting Emily back on). However, that doesn't mean you can disregard the very rules that made your world believable in the first place.
What Do Fans Think About ‘The Handmaid's Tale’ Finale?
If you felt something was off about Season 6, you're not alone. Many fans of The Handmaid's Tale have expressed the same concern.
“[It’s] just odd how they could prance back and forth between Canada, some safe compound in no man’s land and the center of the hive in Boston a) in zero time and b) incredibly easily,” Redditor OfficePicasso noticed.
“In my opinion, a lot of time was wasted on storylines I didn't need any more of (i.e., Nick), leaving no room for the things I'd been waiting to see for years (i.e., June and Luke finally rescuing Hannah). In general, it was a great show, but I definitely also felt disappointed by the ending,” another fan, Camilalvrz on Reddit pointed out.
