Who is Marcello in Harry Wild? He turns up in series 4 having faked his own death
The best kind of cozy-mystery character is the one who makes the lead visibly tired. Harry Wild has Jane Seymour as a whiskey-drinking retired literature professor who solves murders, and for three series the person who made her most tired was her son Charlie, a Garda detective who'd like his mother to please stop.
Then series 4 introduced Charlie's father, and Charlie was demoted to second most exhausting man in her life.
So who is he?
Marcello is Harry's ex and Charlie's Italian father, a man who, by Harry's account, has made roughly one appearance per decade in his son's life. Series 4 opens with him dead. There's a funeral in Dublin. People wear black. Harry has feelings, or at least the whiskey version of feelings.
And then Marcello walks in. Alive. To his own funeral. Which, as entrances go, is up there with Rhaenyra landing a dragon at a wedding.
The reason he faked his death: he'd been living in a little village on the Italian coast, discovered a local couple was extorting the villagers, got involved, and ended up on the run from a gangster. So, naturally, he came to Dublin to hide behind his ex-wife.
Who plays him
Marcello is played by Edoardo Costa, an Italian model-turned-actor with one of those filmographies that makes you go "oh, him." He was Emerson, one of the henchmen chasing Bruce Willis around in Live Free or Die Hard. He did a stint on The Bold and the Beautiful. He was in Non-Stop with Liam Neeson. He's also a longtime fixture of Italian TV, including the soap Vivere.
In other words: exactly the face you want for a man who is charming, handsome, and absolutely not to be trusted with a house key.
The trouble he brings
Marcello shows up in the middle of series 4 and stays through the finale, weaving through four episodes while Harry and Fergus (Rohan Nedd) deal with an entirely separate slate of murders: a killer who flips a coin to decide who lives, a sabotaged racehorse, a dance school with vanishing performers, and a crime convention where a woman dressed as Harry Wild is pushed off a balcony.
Jane Seymour, who also executive produces, summed up the Marcello arc with the enthusiasm of someone who got to do a lot of eye-rolling on camera. "First, we think he's dead, but then we find out he's not quite so dead, and he is trouble," she told World Screen. "So, that's fun!"
The official series 4 synopsis is even blunter: Marcello "brings a whole lot of trouble to Harry's door." Harry's door has seen things.
Harry, to Marcello, in episode 4, after he offers to explain the fake death: "Don't bother, because you'll only tell me a lie or something idiotic." Reader, she was right on both counts.
Where to find him
Series 4 streamed on Acorn TV in May and June 2025 and is still there. Marcello appears in episodes 3 through 6. Series 5, which ran this summer, moved on to a different kind of complication in Harry's life: a handsome new State Pathologist played by Joe Lando, Seymour's old Dr. Quinn flame, which is a whole other article.
Whether Marcello ever rises from the dead a second time is unconfirmed. I'd keep the funeral clothes handy.
