Tarantino Hates All Superhero Movies Except Just One

Tarantino's love for this iconic film starring Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis runs deep. He loved the idea so much that he even directed a scene.
Known for his bold storytelling and even bolder opinions, Tarantino has distanced himself from the superhero genre that dominates today's box office. However, there's only one comic book adaptation that stands as the exception. Let's take a closer look at the film that made Tarantino break his own rules.
‘Sin City’ (2005) Resembles Tarantino's ‘Pulp Fiction’
- On Rotten Tomatoes, Sin City has 76% from critics and 78% from the audience.
- On IMDb, Sin City is rated 8.0/10.
Sin City is based on Frank Miller's comic book of the same name. The film follows multiple interconnected stories that take place in the gritty and violent Basin City. The film's visual style, featuring a high-contrast black-and-white palette with selective use of color, is unlike anything we've seen before.
Just like Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Sin City has a nonlinear storytelling that connects different character arcs.
Tarantino’s Take: Superhero Movies Miss the Mark (‘Sin City’ Is Safe, Though)
During a conversation on “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast with Tom Segura, Tarantino was open about not liking superhero movies. In fact, he went so far as to claim that the actors involved are not real movie stars.
“You have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they're not movie stars," he said. "It's these franchise characters that become a star.”
However, when talking about Sin City, Tarantino first and foremost praised its lead, Mickey Rourke.
“He [Robert Rodriguez] actually cast an actor and turned him into Marv, and Mickey Rourke was great, and it’s why everyone remembers Sin City. As great as it is, it’s Mickey Rourke’s phenomenal performance that blew us out of our socks,” Tarantino said (via Far Out Magazine).
Tarantino Loved the Idea of ‘Sin City’ So Much He Directed a Scene
Tarantino himself had a hand in creating Sin City's vision. He guest-directed a memorable car scene featuring Clive Owen and Benicio del Toro. As Robert Rodriguez noted in the film's featurette:
“We wanted a different tone for that scene anyway and you gave it that stamp and I think people will know that you directed that sequence.”
This wasn't the first time the duo worked together. Rodriguez and Tarantino collaborated on Kill Bill, Grindhouse, Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn.
