Almost 30 years ago, the Crain family experienced a tragedy in Hill House. They bought the estate with the intention of restoring and reselling it, but the house's paranormal activity quickly drove its new inhabitants crazy.

Even as adults, the Crains cannot understand what happened in this cursed place – an attack by mysterious forces or a terrible psychological catastrophe.

Faced with a new drama, the five siblings and their father have a chance to heal old wounds and reunite – or destroy their lives completely.

The Haunting of Hill House is based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel of the same name, a classic of Gothic literature.

Flanagan interprets the story quite freely, adding modern elements, such as drug addiction resulting from childhood trauma.

The director successfully follows the main rule of the genre: to overcome fear, you must face it. The TV format and nonlinear narrative create incomparable tension, gradually drawing viewers into an atmosphere of madness and revealing each character's personality.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'The Haunting of Hill House'?

  • The Haunting of Hill House has 93% from critics and 91% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the series has a score of 8.5/10.
