Yellowstone’s prequel has seen another epic return to the screens just several days ago.

While Taylor Sheridan is booked and busy developing a new season for its most recent Western hit show Landman, his other successful series has just broken a major record after debuting with another instalment less than a week ago.

Launched back in 2022, 1923 came as one of two prequels to Sheridan’s Yellowstone and stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford in the leading roles.

Returning to the screens roughly after 2 long years of wait, 1923 quickly became Paramount+’s new darling and kicked its second and final season off with a much bigger upgrade compared to the first season.

1923’s Season 2 Premiere Doubles Season 2 Episode 1’s Viewership

The show’s new instalment debuted on Paramount+ on February 23 and, according to Deadline, “averaged 5.4 million global viewers, up 146% from year one (2.2 million)”.

The streamer also specified that 1923 currently has the biggest opening for its original project in Paramount+’s history. This is an impressive result given that the company has a longstanding deal with Taylor Sheridan, agreeing to release all of his current shows on the platform, with some of them having had more success than 1923’s season 1.

Going back in time to trace the Dutton family’s history, the series centres on the couple of Cara and Jacob Dutton as they have to navigate through hardships of Prohibition, drought and the imminent Great Depression, let alone some local issues.

Despite what some might say about the writer-director’s writing of women for Landman, Helen Mirren is convinced Sheridan has finally broken the curse of the Western genre’s problematic trope.

Ahead of 1923’s season 2 premiere, the actress gushed over Sheridan’s talent for creating exceptional and compelling characters, which is especially important when it comes to female characters in Western-y shows.

“He’s written a whole series of great, great women’s roles. Those roles didn’t exist when I was growing up in our business. Even as an audience member, I never saw these people on the screen. I never really liked Westerns because the women in them were so awful”, Mirren shared, highlighting that young women should give credit to Sheridan’s work that gives a way better representation of female characters in this type of series.

Meanwhile, 1923’s season 2 episode 2 will land on Paramount+ on March 2.
