The movie was blessed with Sheridan’s writing, but still couldn’t get close to the success of the original.

Now centred on the expansion of his Western-y TV universe, Taylor Sheridan has been long known and praised for his exceptional writing, the talent he manifested soon after starting his career in movies and on television as an actor.

He then moved on to helming several extremely successful shows at once, but remained somewhere nearby for other filmmakers who needed a solid story to eventually bring to the screen.

A similar thing happened back in 2015, when Sheridan teamed up with none other than Dune ’s Denis Villeneuve, drafting a script for the latter’s hit thriller Sicario. The movie was so successful it eventually spawned a 2018 follow-up which is currently having a second life in Netflix ’s top.

Proving Sheridan’s cemented status as one of the most acclaimed writers in the modern-day industry, the movie was suddenly brought back to life years after its initial release and is now sitting at the 5th position in Netflix’s US top chart, according to FlixPatrol.

A sequel that reunites Sicario’s stars Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin, Sicario: Day of the Soldado picks the original story up, following the events that unfold on the same US-Mexico border.

Del Toro reprises his role as Alejandro Gillick, a former Mexican prosecutor and now assassin receiving a call from Brolin’s FBI agent Matt Graver after the whole situation at the border goes down into complete madness and results in powerful Mexican drug cartels’ initiative to smuggle terrorists across the US border.

As a means to push a powerful kingpin’s buttons, Alejandro kidnaps his daughter, but the escalating war will soon make them question everything they have been fighting for all along.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado Falls Short of Its Predecessor

Despite having had a promising start as a sequel to one of Denis Villeneuve’s early hits, Day of the Soldado wasn’t met with as much enthusiasm.

With a budget estimated as $45 million, the movie grossed around $76 million in the box office, showing way less impressive results than Sicario which back in the day made a triple profit off its $30 million budget.

The critical response is polarising too: the original film is currently holding 92% and 85% from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, while its sequel keeps 62% and 66% respectively.

Still, Day of the Soldado was a solid ground for a third movie to enter the development phase, though nothing about its release has been said ever since.
