We've rounded up the key releases of August that you definitely shouldn't miss.
As summer comes to a close, we can look forward to a new season of Ted Lasso, as well as the debut of Lanterns, an ambitious superhero detective show already hailed as one of the most anticipated projects of the revamped DC Universe.
Additionally, sci-fi fans will enjoy the continuation of Apple TV+'s Dark Matter, while literature enthusiasts are waiting for the second part of the adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.
1. 'Ted Lasso' Season 4

Release Date: August 5, 2026
Streaming Platform: Apple TV+
Technically, Ted Lasso concluded in 2023 after three highly successful seasons. Richmond played its final match, the coach flew home, and Rebecca changed her mind about selling the club. However, hit shows aren't simply canceled, so Ted Lasso will continue.
Ted Lasso will return to coach a women's soccer team, and the other characters will navigate their own challenges while seeking a balance between their careers and personal lives.
2. 'Blood Sacrifice'

Release Date: August 20, 2026
Streaming Platform: Netflix
The Stockholm police receive a call about a break-in and dispatch two officers to the scene, only to find them dead the next day. It soon became clear that a serial killer targeting police officers was on the loose.
Detective Thomas Berg, the lead investigator, is forced to turn to someone he hasn't spoken to in years: his father.
Fans of Nordic noir, such as The Chestnut Man, are sure to appreciate this Swedish series from Netflix. This unique crime drama blends the hunt for a serial killer with the personal story of a father and son who must work together despite their inability to find common ground.
3. 'Lanterns'

Release Date: August 16, 2026
Streaming Platform: HBO Max
Hal Jordan, a former test pilot, has long served in the Green Lantern Corps, a group of spacefaring superheroes empowered by extraordinary rings. His new partner is John Stewart, and together, they must investigate a crime in Nebraska. Hal is convinced that extraterrestrial forces are involved.
There haven't been any live-action solo stories featuring this team since the disastrous Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds. This time, the decision was made to give the action and visual style a darker, more grounded tone.
However, after the first trailers were released, fans expressed frustration over the lack of green, the heroes' signature color.
4. 'Dark Matter' Season 2

Release Date: August 28, 2026
Streaming Platform: Apple TV+
The first season of Dark Matter followed scientist Jason Dessen, who encountered an alternate version of himself and was forced into a parallel world. Meanwhile, his counterparts vie for the protagonist's wife because they only ended up together in one version of reality.
In the follow-up, Jason and his family will likely discover that their new life is still far from safe, and they will once again be confronted with the challenge of multiple worlds.
5. 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' Season 2

Release Date: August 5, 2026
Streaming Platform: Netflix
The screen adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's magnum opus was originally conceived as a two-part project – the first season covered only half of the novel. Consequently, a continuation was essential to conclude the characters' story.
By the end of the first season, Aureliano Buendía had transformed into a renowned yet emotionally hollow military commander while his family simultaneously expanded and fell apart.
The continuation will depict the gradual decline of the town of Macondo and the Buendía family's ultimate fate.
6. 'Reacher' Season 4

Release Date: August 12, 2026
Streaming Platform: Prime Video
Amazon Prime and the creators of Reacher were so confident in the series' success that they renewed it for a fourth season before the third season even premiered. Their confidence paid off – fans embraced the adaptation of Persuader, the seventh book in the Reacher series.
The next installment will likely return to the classic formula that launched the project: a lone protagonist arriving in a new location to set things right.
7. 'The Shards'

Release Date: August 5, 2026
Streaming Platform: Hulu
Bret and his friends are high school students at an elite school. They are joined by Robert, who claims to have previously been in a psychiatric hospital. It seems the newcomer is hiding something from Bret and the rest of the group – or perhaps Bret is simply too obsessed with the story of a maniac terrorizing the area.
This new series comes from Ryan Murphy, creator of American Horror Story, Monsters and numerous other hit projects. Notably, he serves as both producer and director this time.
The plot is based on the book of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis, author of American Psycho. Interestingly, although the novel depicts fictional events, the author presents them as an autobiography.
8. 'Anna Pigeon'

Release Date: August 7, 2026
Streaming Platform: Crave
Anna Pigeon used to enjoy a glamorous social life in the limelight. Following a personal tragedy, however, she left the city to become a national park ranger. She finds no respite there either, as she is constantly investigating complex crimes.
The series is based on Nevada Barr's hugely popular book series featuring Anna Pigeon, which includes 19 novels.
The plot blends classic detective storytelling with the natural world, where wild animals and the elements can be even more dangerous than criminals.
