A major cliffhanger about Outie Mark Scout and Gemma Scout’s fate is yet to be resolved in Severance’s upcoming season 3, but at least things might be pretty clear about Britt Lower’s Helly R. Here’s why the actress thinks fans haven’t been fooled by Ben Stiller this time.

Apple TV+’s biggest sci-fi hit Severance has always been a tricky thing to grasp for many of the show’s fans, but there’s at least one detail from the second season’s finale that they can be sure about.

The series’ sophomore season, which premiered back in January this year, ended on a major plot twist, revealing that Adam Scott’s Mark Scout might have changed his mind after a long and thorough investigation of his wife Gemma Scout’s disappearance.

At the time when nothing else impedes them to have their happy ending, the couple suddenly finds themselves on the different sides of Lumon Industries’ door which separates Outie Gemma Scout from Innie Mark Scout.

The latter is then seen escaping hand-in-hand with Britt Lower’s Helly R. that many thought wasn’t Helly after all. However, the actress has just shared a definite answer to another big mystery.

Britt Lower Is Convinced She Was Helly R. in ‘Severance’ Season 2 Finale

Severance season 2 delves into the complicated relationships between Lumon Industries’ Innies and Outies of the same people, also introducing Helly R.’s Outie Helena Eagan, who is actually the daughter of Lumon Industries’ CEO Jame Eagan.

Despite some fans thinking that Helena might have tricked Mark into believing that she was Helly R., this was never a thing for Severance’s creators to play with, according to Helly R./Helena Eagan’s actress Britt Lower.

“No, there’s no trickery involved in the Severance collaborative. [...] Over time, she’s forming this chosen family with Irving, Dylan and with Mark. The connection she has to these people who she loves is then the journey of season two. All of these Innies have this new information about who they are, and it makes them even hungrier for purpose and meaning in their lives. So then to see her on that tri-desk at the end saying, “They give us half a life and think we won’t fight for it?” I just can’t believe that anyone else would have said that”, the actress revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Britt Lower Says Judging Innie Mark’s Decision Is a “Step Too Far”

The shocking plot twist that saw Mark abandoning his newly found wife might have upset many viewers just a little bit, though Lower thinks there’s definitely no reason to be disappointed in the character after that.

“Mark’s subjective experience of awareness — his consciousness — is separate from his Outtie’s. So, you have to put yourself in his shoes. These Innies have been stripped of so much already, right? They don’t get to see daylight. They don’t get to experience music or art — not really, not very much, at least. They don’t get to make choices about what they’re gonna have for lunch, or what they put on in the morning. And to expect him to make a decision for his Outtie’s dream to reunite with his wife is perhaps a step too far,” she said.

When Is ‘Severance’ Season 3 Premiering?

Severance’s next season doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s expected to arrive on Apple TV+ sometime in 2027.
