The Supernatural prequel is not exactly known for being too canon-conscious, but this time we may have been wrong to accuse it of a vampire plot hole.

In episode 9 of The Winchesters, many fans were upset by what seemed to be a major plot hole when Carlos used his hair to fight vampires with holy water.

Don't get us wrong, Carlos looked great with his questionable fighting technique, but the fact that holy water is suddenly being used to kill vampires has sparked debate in the fandom.

In Supernatural, Dean and Sam killed vampires by chopping off their heads and then impaling them with a stake. However, The Winchesters suddenly discovered that holy water burns vampires, though without stopping them completely.

After an initial wave of outrage from OG fans, others noted that there is plenty of room in the Supernatural universe to consider it an acceptable addition.

"In the mothership John never mentioned that holy water wouldn't or would work on vamps. They only knew decaptation, stakes and dead man's blood. Also John in OG SPN learned about Vamps from Daniel Elkins who probably didn't know every detail either and maybe Daniel will show up in TW," Redditor Coleyb23 noted.

In fact, Supernatural has never explicitly stated that holy water is useless against vampires; it's just that Sam and Dean would never use it when fighting the bloodsuckers.

"[On Supernatural], until Deadman's Blood episode 20 of season 1, Dean and Sam believed vampires were extinct. They had never fought vampires before. So they first used machetes and basically stuck with it. It's like if you never used training wheels to learn to ride a bike, why would go back to them afterwards?" Redditor Alpha_Storm said.

If that is the case, then The Winchesters may have just established a new way to fight vampires in the Supernatural universe — unless the season finale erases everything as something that never happened.

Many people believe that to be the case, suggesting that the events of the prequel take place in some sort of alternate timeline that Dean Winchester created to set things right.

This would make the changes made to John and Mary's story acceptable within the Supernatural canon.

The new episode of The Winchesters will premiere next Tuesday, February 7th on The CW.
