The 2-Ingredient Potato Hack: How to Make Iconic American Tater Tots at Home
With this recipe, you’ll forget that French fries have ever existed.
It’s no secret that any country in the world has at least a couple of its most used recipes for potatoes — in the case of the US, it’s not only about the famous French fries.
If you’re left with some potatoes you have no idea what to do with, try making American-style tater tots which you’ve probably seen hundreds of times in grocery stores. Trust us, the result will be much better than what you might have tried earlier in diners.
Ingredients: 600–700 g of potatoes (leave the skin on if using early potatoes), 2–3 tbsp of flour, salt and black pepper to taste, ½ tsp of paprika, garlic powder (optional), vegetable oil for frying.
Grate the potatoes using a coarse grater, then gently squeeze out the excess moisture; this is important so they hold their shape and turn out crispy. Add the flour, salt, and spices, and mix well until the mixture is smooth. Use your hands to shape the mixture into small, oblong cylinders.
Heat the oil until hot and carefully lower the shapes into the deep fryer. Fry in portions until golden and crispy on all sides. Place the finished pieces on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Serve them hot with ketchup, cheese sauce, or on their own.
