A surprisingly realistic action movie starring Gerard Butler.

Summary

  • Gerard Butler is one of the leading actors in action movies.
  • In 2020, he starred in a film that is considered one of the best in the genre of disaster movies.
  • Despite the failure at the box office, critics and audiences have raved about it, and now this film is available for streaming on Max.

Though Gerard Butler's fame peaked in the 2000s and early 2010s, the actor's fans still get excited about his new roles, even though in recent years he has mostly starred in relatively niche projects that have failed at the box office and not received the warmest of reviews. But Butler remains as hardcore a supporter of the action genre as the audience, and therefore some of his projects in recent years are actually worth the time spent on them — the lack of attention given to the films starring Butler should sometimes not be considered due to terrible acting or poor writing. External factors may have influenced the success of this or that project.

For example, in December 2020 a new film with Butler was released, which received very positive reviews from both critics and viewers. But we should not forget that back then we were in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, so it's no wonder the project did not get enough public attention. Nevertheless, it is one of the best disaster movies, which is also considered one of the most frightening, thanks to the realism of human feelings during the last days of Earth's existence. Despite the obscurity in 2024, the movie is worth your time, considering that it is available for streaming on Max.

Disaster B-Movie Starring Gerard Butler

We are talking about the 2020 apocalyptic action thriller Greenland. It is worth mentioning that the movie was originally going to be directed by Neill Blomkamp and star Chris Evans. In the end, however, the director was Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen, Kandahar), and the lead role, as we said, was played by Butler. The script was written by Chris Sparling.

According to the plot, a colossal comet comes to Earth, capable of destroying all life on the planet. As a result, the world is plunged into mass psychosis, panic and lawlessness, which the state tries unsuccessfully to control. In such a situation finds the Garritys family (Butler played the father of the family), which goes to Greenland, because there are supposed to be underground shelters that can protect even in the most pessimistic scenario.

The film received an impressive 78% from critics and 60% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not insignificant for a disaster movie. At the same time, Greendland failed at the box office, grossing $52.3 million against a budget of $35 million. Unfortunately, the commercial failure was due to poor marketing and the crisis in the entertainment industry in the midst of the pandemic.
