Neil Diamond could’ve become a part of a running joke.

The Big Bang Theory was always so notable and relatable to TV viewers for two reasons: first, there were many references to pop and nerd culture that people enjoyed, and second, it focused heavily on friendships rather than romance.

Although the characters all grew up and developed some love interests over the years, the friendships remained central to the plot.

As more characters joined the cast, the writers had more opportunities to mix and match their personalities to create something special. Unfortunately, some of those opportunities were completely missed.

If there was a chance to bring back the golden years of The Big Bang Theory, fans would demand to see more of Amy and Howard's friendship. Even though the duo doesn't seem to have that much in common, their one-time bonding over Neil Diamond's music showed the potential they have.

The fact that the writers decided to never go back into that territory was more than surprising to the viewers of any sitcom.

Many fans believe that both Howard and Amy would benefit from such a friendship. The Big Bang Theory was written in a way that often used female friend groups to counter the male friend group, but the two rarely came together as friends.

Do you think The Big Bang Theory would benefit from more friendships?

Aside from the sweet, almost sibling relationship between Sheldon and Penny, there was very little friendly banter between the opposite-sex characters. The chemistry between Mayim Bialik and Simon Helberg was so great that the writers could have easily explored it further. Instead, they chose to pretend it never happened.

While it must be hard to navigate so many characters and relationships between them, many believe that even leaving Neil Diamond as a little fun reference, easter egg, or running joke between Howard and Amy would have made a huge difference in the perception of their friendship.

To refresh your memory of what little moments the characters had together, you can re-watch The Big Bang Theory on Netflix or MAX. Keep an eye out for more news on the series' confirmed spinoff production.
