The Buccaneers started strong, but is now rapidly going downhill. Here's what went wrong with the show that was supposed to rival Bridgerton.

The Buccaneers, which was originally a daring and charming adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel of the same name, is rapidly losing viewers' love in its second season.

While the first season was consistent and coherent (albeit not a dramatic masterpiece), the show now increasingly resembles a cheap soap opera where drama for the sake of drama displaces logic and depth.

Viewers are increasingly complaining about pointless plot twists that do not develop characters, but instead create artificial tension.

Sudden quarrels, inexplicable changes in behavior, and forced conflicts make watching simply tiresome. Redditor aGrlHasNoUsername wrote:

“It started off strong, but I just finished episode 4 and the plot lines are absolutely wild and inconsistent. [...] And don't even get me started on this rushed "romance" between Theo and Lizzy. It's so out of character for them both and it makes no sense.”

Episode 4 is particularly disappointing. Nan suddenly leaves for Guy and Jinny, and immediately regrets her decision. Meanwhile, Theo becomes a selfish villain, and Lizzy betrays her friend AND her fiance by sleeping with Theo.

Rather than deepening the characters' relationships, the writers introduce new conflicts out of nowhere, as if trying to keep viewers hooked with cheap tricks. Reddit user IfUDontNoMeByNow commented:

“It's just a soap opera now. And what Lizzy did is NOT okay- I don't care if Nan is with someone else too, you don't sleep with one of your best friend's HUSBANDS wtf. Did they fire the writers from season 1?”

'The Buccaneers' Has Turned Into a Soap Opera With No Logic or Clear Character Motivations

The main complaint among viewers is the inconsistent behavior of the characters. For instance, Lizzy, who was Nan's devoted friend in the first season, now acts impulsively and without clear motivation.

The same happens with other characters – their actions are not explained by the logic of development, but rather by the need to create more pointless tension.

Romantic storylines that previously seemed promising now seem far-fetched. Relationships between characters flare up and then fade away for unclear reasons, and new love triangles are introduced solely to maintain the spectacle. As a result, instead of complex, multifaceted characters, we see faceless puppets.

Viewers had hoped that The Buccaneers would be worthy competition for Bridgerton – it was until recently. However, so far, the second season has caused more irritation than admiration.
