'The Buccaneers' Season 2's Biggest Fail? This Trainwreck Romance, Fans Say
If you didn't expect Lizzy and Theo to have any romantic feelings for each other, you're not alone. Here are a lot of things that went wrong with this storyline.
The premiere of the second season of the highly anticipated series The Buccaneers caused a storm of emotions among viewers. However, not all reactions were positive.
Fans of the show, which is based on Edith Wharton's novel of the same name, are already expressing dissatisfaction with one of the key storylines: the development of the relationship between Lizzy and Theo.
Lizzy & Theo Storyline Disappointed Many 'The Buccaneers' Fans
Lizzy and Theo have quickly become favorite characters for many viewers during the first season. Lizzy is a loyal and devoted friend, and Theo is a real gentleman who would do anything for Nan.
In the second season, however, it seems that the writers have taken a different path. Something unexpected has happened: it appears that Theo and Lizzy are about to have an affair.
Many fans were angered by this twist. Redditor poetfromsaturn wrote:
“It is so random and out of place. [...] Lizzy deserves someone that is completely about her. I'm not sure how we're supposed to believe that Theo is gonna just be completely over Nan and start pining over her best friend. [...] I would've loved the Hector + Lizzy storyline, he is completely about her and so sweet.”
Such an Affair Is Out of Character for Both Lizzy and Theo
The romance between Theo and Lizzy is made even more outrageous by how out of character it seems for both of them. There was no hint of their interest in each other in the first season, nor any indication that they could even think of betraying Nan.
Many viewers believe the writers made this decision just to increase the drama. Reddit user IamChrystalchris commented:
“It's interesting because before season two, Lizzy and Theo were my favorite characters. But never once did it cross my mind that I would want them together. But anything for drama I guess.”
Many Viewers Are Rooting for Hector
Besides, Lizzy already has a suitor, Hector. He has been portrayed as a decent, charming, and caring man who fights for workers' rights and enthusiastically embraces Nan's feminist ideas.
If their relationship goes beyond flirting, then Lizzy's betrayal is definitely not what he deserves. Redditor FirstAnywhere6839 wrote:
“Hector does seem like an amazing guy and what he did for lizzy in the last episode was genuinely sweet.”
However, given that Theo practically found out that Nan cheated on him with Guy right before the wedding, it's easy to imagine his fantasies about and love for Nan will be completely destroyed, which could push him toward Lizzy.
Hopefully, the writers will handle this storyline elegantly instead of making it an affair that comes out of nowhere just for the sake of drama.
