The Dexter: Resurrection ending puts Dexter on the wrong side of the kill room
Leon Prater spent a whole season building a private museum of serial killers. In the finale, he locks Dexter inside it as the newest exhibit, with Batista's body for company.
The Dexter: Resurrection season 1 finale, "And Justice for All...," streamed on Paramount+ with Showtime on September 5, 2025, and it opens with Dexter (Michael C. Hall) where he has never been: on the inside of someone else's kill room. He's locked in Leon Prater's vault, a trophy room full of serial-killer memorabilia with a killing table in the middle, and the man who came to New York to catch him, Angel Batista, is dead on the floor next to him. Season 2 premieres October 30, 2026.
Episode 9 is how he got there. Batista tells Prater (Peter Dinklage) that the killer called Red is Dexter Morgan, and Charley (Uma Thurman), who works for Prater, marches Dexter into the vault at gunpoint, where Batista is already strapped to the table. Prater wants Dexter as his protégé, and the entrance exam is killing Batista. Dexter cuts him loose instead, Batista goes for Dexter's throat, and Prater shoots Batista in the back.
Dying, Batista hears Dexter confess to being the Bay Harbor Butcher while insisting he didn't kill Doakes or LaGuerta. Batista doesn't buy the distinction. His last words, as Wikipedia's episode summary records them, are "Dexter Morgan... f—k you."
Inside Prater's vault
The finale keeps Dexter locked in long enough for his ghosts to visit. He imagines his brother Brian Moser (Christian Camargo) mocking him for getting attached to people, then gets to work on Prater's archive, which includes a file on Cooper Morris, the man who killed Prater's parents. Prater and Charley missed one thing in the room: Batista's phone.
Dexter uses it to reach Harrison (Jack Alcott), who gets into Prater's gala and is promptly caught by Charley. Over the phone, Dexter shows her that Prater has kept a file on her too, including her role in Mia's murder, and she lets Harrison go. The vault code turns out to be Morris's inmate number, a clue Dexter cracks because the gala falls on the anniversary of Prater's parents' deaths. Before leaving, he grabs several files, among them Al's, his own blood slides and Red's thumbprint.
Flipping the room
Prater, meanwhile, finally wants to kill someone himself. He shuts off the cameras, holds Harrison at gunpoint and summons Dexter, and Harrison saves them both with the M99 syringe Dexter gave him earlier. With Prater sedated, Dexter straps him to the killing table in his own vault, turns down his offer of money and kills him.

That's the moment the title turns over. Dexter tells Prater that what drives him is the Morgan family sense of justice alongside the Dark Passenger, and he does it surrounded by the collection Prater built to study men like him. TVLine singled out Hall's delivery of the episode's angriest line: "Never utter my son's name again!"
"This is as close to a perfect 10 dismount as can be."

The cleanup is classic Dexter. He wipes the room, says goodbye to Batista and trips the alarm on the way out. The police find Batista's body, a murder weapon with Prater's prints on it and the memorabilia, and conclude that Prater killed him. Then Dexter takes Prater's yacht out and drops the body in New York Harbor, a boat ritual fans have been waiting for since the original series.
Why Batista had to die
Killing off David Zayas's Batista was the season's biggest swing, and Zayas has defended it. Batista came to New York to get justice from Dexter, and he died the only way that story could end without Dexter getting caught.
"I think it's the right way to tell the story."
— David Zayas, to TVLine
The finale also hands Dexter his next season. Detectives Claudette Wallace and Melvin Oliva find Prater's files on the New York Ripper, and Dexter sails away with the rest of Prater's archive as a hit list.
Where everyone stands for season 2
- Dexter: Out of the vault, back on the water and carrying a collector's worth of targets. His closing voiceover admits he'll never be normal but can blend in, thanks to Harrison.
- Harrison: Alive, and now an accessory to his father's latest kill.
- Charley: Alive, out of Prater's employ and leaving the city with her mother. Thurman is confirmed for season 2.
- The New York Ripper: The police now have Prater's file on him. In season 2 he's Don Framt, played by Brian Cox, alongside Dan Stevens and Gabriel Luna as two more serial killers, per Soap Central.
The business side made the comeback an easy call. The premiere drew 3.1 million global cross-platform viewers in its first three days, TVLine reported, the most-streamed premiere in Showtime history. Six weeks later, Paramount cancelled Dexter: Original Sin despite having already renewed it, which left Resurrection as the franchise's only live Dexter.
"He's good at making messes and getting out of them."
— Michael C. Hall, to TVLine, on Dexter in season 2
Season 2 arrives on October 30 under a new corporate owner, since Paramount Skydance closed its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6. Dexter spent one finale as somebody's exhibit. He starts the next one holding Prater's catalog, and one of the killers in it is played by Brian Cox.
