The Diplomat ends its fourth season a breath before the vice president of the United States starts talking, and Netflix hasn't said whether anyone will hear what he says.

Season 4 of Debora Cahn's political thriller arrived on October 15, all eight episodes at once. Keri Russell plays Kate Wyler, the American ambassador to the United Kingdom; Rufus Sewell plays her husband Hal, now vice president; and Allison Janney plays President Grace Penn, a role that won her an Emmy this year. As of October 20, Netflix has neither renewed the show nor canceled it.

Where season 4 leaves things

The finale, "Warships," takes place at a G7 summit in Tuscany. Grace tells the assembled leaders that the U.S. took the Poseidon, a nuclear torpedo, from a Russian submarine off England's northeast coast, and that American forces will fire on any country that interferes, allies included. Kate resigns on the spot. Chief of staff Billie Appiah, Miguel Ganon and Hal walk out after her.

Then Kate turns to the press and announces that the vice president would like to make a statement. The episode ends there. What it leaves hanging:

  • Hal's statement — the speech is never heard.
  • Grace — still president, holding a stolen Russian nuclear weapon after publicly threatening America's allies.
  • Kate — out of the job the show is named after.
  • London — under a new prime minister, Jodie Whittaker's Bethan Vaughn, who already knows about the Poseidon.

Cahn hasn't given anything away. Asked where season 5 would pick up, and whether viewers would hear Hal's speech, she told TV Guide's Max Gao only this.

"That's a really good question. Stay tuned, my friend," Cahn told TV Guide.

Where renewal stands

This is the first time The Diplomat has premiered a season without the next one already ordered:

  • Season 3 — confirmed a few weeks before season 2 premiered in October 2024.
  • Season 4 — ordered in May 2025, five months before season 3 premiered.
  • Season 5 — nothing yet, five days after season 4's premiere.

Netflix hasn't explained the delay. But the two sets of numbers that are public, its own viewing figures and its production company's accounts in Britain, point in opposite directions.

The bill

Each season of The Diplomat is made by a production company set up in the U.K., and those companies file accounts to claim British tax credits. Forbes' Caroline Reid went through the filings last year:

  • Season 1 — $68.2 million spent by the end of 2023.
  • Season 2 — $76.9 million, for six episodes.
  • Season 3 — $82.8 million, for eight episodes, the show's most expensive season. Those accounts stop at the end of 2024, and filming ran into March 2025, so the final figure is likely higher.

Season 4's accounts aren't public yet. It shot from November 3, 2025, to June 5, 2026, across New York, England and Tuscany, and according to Russell, some scenes used as many as 300 extras.

The audience has moved the other way. In Netflix's own Top 10 data, season 1 drew 8.5 million views in its opening week, season 2 drew 5.6 million and season 3 drew 4.8 million.

Every season has cost more in total than the one before it, and every season has opened to fewer viewers.

Season 4's first-week figure is due in Netflix's weekly Top 10 report, published on Tuesdays.

What's in its favor

The show has more going for it than the trend line suggests:

  • The Emmy — Janney won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series this year, the show's first Emmy win.
  • The reviews — season 4 opened with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • The catalog — Netflix's engagement reports credit the series with 783.8 million hours viewed between 2023 and mid-2026, or 126.4 million views.
  • The ending — a season that stops mid-sentence is hard to leave as a series finale.

When season 5 could arrive

Probably not in October 2027, even with a renewal this week. Season 4 went from order to release in about 17 months: ordered in May 2025, filming that November, wrapped in June 2026, out in October. A renewal now on the same schedule puts season 5 in 2028.

Since 2024, The Diplomat has come out every October: October 31, 2024; October 16, 2025; October 15, 2026. That run almost certainly ends next year.

She has been no more forthcoming about the schedule. Asked by ScreenRant about the timing of season 5 and its writers' room, Cahn said: "You can ask, but I can't answer."
