He promises to give his axe to whoever defeats him, but they must appear for a second duel in a distant chapel a year from now. Gawain, King Arthur's nephew and the son of a powerful witch, decides to face the stranger.

Gawain cuts off the intruder's head, but the Green Knight takes it in his arms and flees, reminding Gawain of their agreement. Fate cannot be appeased and Gawain sets out on a journey through mystical lands, certain to meet his death.
