Test your series knowledge: have you noticed this Easter egg in The Handmaid's Tale finale?

The moment we've all been waiting for has finally arrived. After 8 years of intense fight with Gilead, The Handmaid's Tale has come to a beautiful and poetic conclusion. However, within the finale hides an Easter egg so subtle that even the most attentive viewers might have missed it.

In the final scenes of the series, June returns to the Waterford house. But this time, everything is different. Gone are the days of the infamous red dresses and white wings that once symbolized her oppression. She's free.

Easter egg hidden in plain sight: June could've worn any color she wanted, but she chose to put on a greenish teal coat.

Why does it matter? Teal is the color of the dresses that wives wore when Gilead was in full swing.

Why greenish teal, though? The color June wears isn't an exact replica of the teal the wives wore. It leans more towards green. This is because green is the opposite of red on a color wheel. The opposite of her past “uniform”.

Costume design killed two birds with one stone by using green to symbolize the end of oppression and a punch of teal to symbolize June reclaiming her story. She's now free to tell it.

Since the beginning of the show, color has played a significant role. Natalie Bronfman, costume designer back in Season 3, told Pushing Pixels about its importance.

“Colors have a meaning. Shape has a meaning. Fabric itself has a meaning. You should be able to tell if this person is sad or depressed, is he a bad guy or a good guy,” she said.

"It’s juxtaposing her role. She was a handmaid, she burned the red robes, and now she’s wearing green. She’s back with her husband and she’s in charge. She is a wife, with power over her past, telling her story on her own terms," Redditor RinoTheBouncer wrote.

“I loved the color that June was wearing in the last scene when she walked back through that house. She was wearing the color (or close) that Serena (or any wife) would wear. SHE was now the lady leading the house,” Redditor missdesilu08 said.
