A timeless Ibsen heroine returns, reimagined for today’s screen.

Watching the turns in Nia DaCosta’s career, I was struck by her latest choice. After the chaos of The Marvels, she pivots to something smaller and sharper: adapting Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler.

The new trailer teases a tense, stylish take, with Tessa Thompson stepping into one of theatre’s most complex roles. Can she make Hedda feel alive for modern audiences? The odds look promising.

A Classic Reimagined

DaCosta keeps the 19th-century setting but reshapes it with bold casting. Thompson’s Hedda is trapped in marriage and restless for power, her choices setting tragedy in motion.

She is joined by Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock and Nina Hoss. The film premieres at TIFF, followed by a limited release on October 22 and Prime Video worldwide on October 29.

A Fresh Start for DaCosta

From Little Woods to Candyman and then The Marvels, her career has taken some unexpected turns. Hedda looks like a step back toward character and atmosphere rather than spectacle. Thompson and DaCosta have worked well together before, but whether this reunion will truly redefine them both remains to be seen.
