Throw away the complicated gelatin sheets — a simple Hawaiian pantry hack transforms a can of coconut milk into a rich, silky dessert square.

If you are craving a tropical treat but refuse to turn on a hot oven or spend hours measuring complex ingredients, this traditional Hawaiian classic is about to become your absolute favorite dessert.

Haupia is a wonderfully light, traditional coconut pudding that requires only a few basic pantry staples and about five minutes of actual stovetop work.

What makes this dessert so brilliant is its unique, velvety texture; unlike heavy European puddings that rely on gelatin or eggs, this vegan-friendly treat uses a modest amount of cornstarch to achieve a clean, sliceable firmness that literally melts on your tongue.

Ingredients: coconut milk (not for drinking), sugar, cornstarch, water.

Place the coconut milk over medium heat. Mix the sugar and cornstarch, add water, and stir until the cornstarch is completely dissolved.

As soon as the milk begins to simmer, pour in the mixture of water, cornstarch, and sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Then, stirring constantly, cook the pudding until it thickens. This will take about 10 minutes.

Pour the pudding into a square pan measuring about 20 x 20 cm. Let it set completely.

Flip the pudding over and cut it into 12 pieces.
