The Last of Us Creators Get Brutally Honest About ‘Recast Bella Ramsay’ Complaints: 'Zero Percent'

One of HBO’s most successful series wasn’t safe from a major backlash its leading actress received.
The upcoming second season of HBO’s dystopian drama The Last of Us serves as a reminder that the show is about to get yet another portion of criticism from the original game’s diehard fans.
Based on the video game of the same name, the series received praise for carefully following through the narrative, but then quickly went down in its audiences’ eyes for allegedly miscasting Bella Ramsey for the role of Ellie.
Without too much of a hope, but some still urged The Last of Us’ creators to deal with the problem which, apparently, has been tormenting too many fans. The show’s execs, however, just recently opened up about how much they even considered this option.
The Last of Us Creators Say They Never Even Thought About Recasting Bella Ramsey
Ahead of the second season’s premiere this Sunday, The Last of Us’ writer Neil Druckmann and showrunner Craig Mazin broke down on all those pleas regarding Bella Ramsey who, according to many fans, doesn’t even look like the original video game’s Ellie.
“We've considered recasting Bella exactly zero percent”, Druckmann revealed to GamesRadar.
In the meantime, Mazin weighed in on Bella Ramsey and her character’s physical differences, saying that this was the least important factor to consider and what in fact meant to them the most was “the heart and soul”.
“And I think they did an incredible job. We didn't actually do anything to age them up. We just wrote the character to be older. And, big surprise, Bella Ramsey portrays it gorgeously”, he added.
The Last of Us Fandom Is Divided on Bella Ramsey
While Ramsey isn’t going anywhere at least until The Last of Us’ season 3, which has just been confirmed, there will still be not only those who can’t get Ellie’s game appearance out of their mind, but also the game fans who actually left their prejudices behind.
“I think she's f—king exceptional. I was kinda worried when she was cast, but then she shut me the f—k up after seeing her in the show. Episode 8 showcased her performance that imo deserves an Emmy”, Redditor SavageRedStorm shared in a show-themed thread.
Redditor Throbbing-Kielbasa-3 offered a different perspective, suggesting they were a fan of the original game and stating that the physical appearance doesn’t mean anything as long as the actor is good in the role.
“Ramsay did just that, and then some. Whether it was lines ripped from the game, or completely original lines of dialogue, I never once felt like she wasn't Ellie”, they added then.
